Dr Thomas McWilliams completed his foundation medical training at the Gold Coast University Hospital where he was privileged to undertake residency postings in trauma surgery, orthopaedic surgery, emergency medicine, rehabilitation, and general medicine.

 

Thomas’ love for sport stems from a football career which involved training positions at Brisbane Roar Youth and Sheffield Wednesday Academy before making the move to the USA to play Division 1 College Soccer for Saint Francis University in the NCAA Northeast Conference.

 

After spending time in the USA learning from the college athletics sports medicine system, he had the opportunity to work with Dr Jonathan King at Sports Medicine Central Coast where he was the assistant doctor for the Central Coast Mariners in the A-League.

 

Currently, he is the Head Doctor for the Southport Sharks VFL and QAFLW teams. Previously, he was the assistant doctor for the Brisbane Broncos in the 2023 season and has also provided match day medical coverage for A-League and has worked with Football Australia National Teams. Event Medical coverage has included Gymnastics National Club Carnival, United Cup Tennis, Brisbane International Tennis, and the GNW Ultramarathon.

Popliteal artery entrapment syndrome as a cause for exertional leg pain.

Dr McWilliams is undertaking research with Dr Matthew Hislop evaluating the clinical examination protocols used to help diagnoses this condition.
